Welcome to Learn Vietnamese 30 Days blog

1. Why I Created This Blog

Hello, I'm Khang, the creator of Learn Vietnamese 30 Days website. As a native Vietnamese with a background in linguistics and experience teaching English, I understand the challenges of learning Vietnamese. Many expatriates, including my American partner living in Vietnam, find it difficult due to various reasons.

  • People in Ho Chi Minh City predominantly speak the Southern dialect, while many online learning resources use the standard Northern Vietnamese dialect.
  • Moreover, some materials translate English textbooks into Vietnamese, introducing uncommon words and phrases rarely used by locals.

To address this, my website has a simple goal: to help foreigners, like my partner, understand spoken Southern Vietnamese. The lessons also include my experiences as a non-native Saigonese!

Please be noted that this website focuses on practical, everyday-communication Vietnamese that you hear in daily life. Vietnamese in this website is't for academic purposes.

For those wanting to truly explore Vietnamese food, culture, and navigate all districts, local restaurants, stores, and beautiful countryside areas in the South, learning Vietnamese is essential.

There are three levels of Vietnamese in this website, and each level will be packed into 30 lessons (about 30 days/level):

Good news about Vietnamese spelling:

  • since you're reading in English, learning the Vietnamese alphabet is straightforward, with only seven additional letters.
  • Vietnamese is phonetic, reflecting spoken language, but Southern dialect pronunciation may differ a bit.

Tone marks can be challenging, but don't worry too much – you can fix it later if needed.

And Vietnamese even has jokes about tone mark mistakes in texting! Sometimes tone marks are very important like this:
