What the difference between “Nhà hàng” and “Quán ăn” in Vietnamese?

  • “Nhà hàng” are bigger, nicer restaurants. “Nhà hàng” focuses on food and services.
  • “Quán ăn” are smaller restaurants, from a street vendor with some tables and chairs on the street, to a small and simple restaurant near the street. “Quán ăn” focuses on food and price, so you just have decent service there.

2. Do you have (...) ? in Vietnamese

As you learned Yes-No question structure “...không?” in Vietnamese, we still apply that. However, because “có” also means “have”, we don’t need to repeat “có” twice.

Examples:

Vietnamese English
Bạn tiền không?
(Instead of Bạn có tiền không?)
⇒ Có, tôi tiền.
⇒ Không. Tôi không tiền.
Do you have money?
⇒ Yes, I do.
⇒ No, I don’t.
Nhà hàng bàn cho 2 người lúc 8 giờ tối nay không?
⇒ Có. Nhà hàng bàn.
⇒ Không. Nhà hàng không bàn.
Does the restaurant have a table for 2 people at 08:00 tonight?
⇒ Yes, it does.
⇒ No, it doesn’t.

By now, you learned three meanings of “Có”:

  • It means “Yes” when you answers some Yes-No question.
  • It means “Have/Own” something.
  • It’s used in Yes-No question “... không?”.

Quiz 01: How do you say “Excuse me, is there anyone in the restaurant?” in Vietnamese?

3. "How many people…" and "The bill, please" in Vietnamese?

As you learned “Cái + [này/kia] + bao nhiêu?” (How much is it?), we will have:

Vietnamese English
Của + [pronoun] + tổng cộng + bao nhiêu? How much is mine in total?
⇒ Của + [pronoun] + tổng cộng + [number] ⇒ Yours is + [number] + in total.
[Pronoun] + + tổng cộng + bao nhiêu người? How many people are there in total?
⇒ [Pronoun] + + tổng cộng + [number] + người. ⇒ There are + [number] + people in total.
Nhà + của + [pronoun] + + bao nhiêu người? How many people are there in your family?
Nhà + [pronoun] + + [number] + người. ⇒ My family has + [number] + people.
Tính tiền! The bill, please!

Note: “Tính” means “Calculate”. “Tính tiền” means to ask to calculate money/bill.

Summary : Exploring family relationships at the outset of learning Vietnamese serves as a strategic move, particularly in mastering the intricate topic of pronouns.
